Donald D. Randall bought Standel in the early 70’s. I’m pretty sure it was
1972. This was after he had already started Randall, but the early
Randalls looked like Standels anyways. I do not know if they made them for
Randall or not. Randall has been sold several times since then. RIC
(Rickenbacker) owned them in the early 90’s. They do not own them now.
Even in the late 60’s Standel had a reputation for parts and servicing
difficulties with their transistor products. Donald D. Randall was the
former president of Fender Sales. This was not Fender Musical Instruments,
who actually made the instruments, even after CBS bought them, but was the
sales co that was located in Santa Anna. Their address was on the warranty
cards on 60’s Fender products and they were located next door to the
Rickenbacker factory. Standel also sold Standel guitars for a while.
These were made for them by Harptone in Newark, New Jersey. In 1975 or so
Harptone sold their guitar operations to the Statler Brothersw who were
going to manufacture them in Staunton(sp?), VA and sell them under the name
“Diamond T”. Harptone stayed in business making guitar cases, however I do
not know if they are still in business today. Perhaps Rickenbacker can
help you. Based on personal experience as well as reputation, they can be
wonderful or horrible however since the southern CA music business has
tradionally been quite interwoven and Rickenbacker was a part of this
story, I think it’s worth a try.

Buy the Book!

I cleaned up my tab for Sonny Boy's Help Me and made it into a short book. There's a Kindle version for 99 cents, and if you buy the paperback you get the Kindle free.
