Subject: Band out of tune

Last night I went to a gig by one of Manila's two blues bands. It was
one of those nights when about 100 bands get 30 minutes on stage. The
band tuned to the lead guitar, which, it turned out, was sharp by 1/4
step. The group's occasional harp player -- the best local player
I've encountered here -- of course sounded terrible.

I was called up to the stage for the 4th song. Fortunately, I know the
band. I pulled out of my tackle box one of those six-note pitch pipes
(which I carry for just such an occasion) and asked the band to
retune. The rest of the set went OK. The band, and especially its
own harp player, were however rather embarassed by the whole episode.

I'm curious to know how others cope with an out-of-tune band when
called out of the audience to sit in?

I began collecting data about the microphones used by blue harp players before there was an internet. I began organizing it into in the late 1990s. I accumulated more stuff than I remember. This is some of it.
