Subject: Fabulous Thunderbirds

I caught a set by the T-birds here in Jacksonville last week and they still
have it!! Kid Ramos plays some smokin' twangy geeetarr and Kim Wilson still
is one of the best I've ever seen. OK now for the real details. He didn't
wear a hat.
He kept his harps in a rough little box just wide enough for the harps and
probably long enough to hold about 8 or 10 of 'em. He played with a vintage
Astatic with a black grille (never seen a black grille on one before). The
mic has a toggle switch at the back of the harp (like where Rick Estrin has
his vol. pot on his mic). The tone change was fairly subtle (but I was
about 8 feet away from the band so it was loud). Anyone know what he's
doing with that toggle? Amp Equipment. He used a Sovtek without a model
number listed that I could see, kinda small amp head. This was sitting on a
Fender "Twin" amp head with white knobs, tweed covered but looked like it
had been "retweeded". It didn't look like this amp head was plugged in.

He was blowing through Meisterklasse harps for most of the night. I was
close enough to check them out and was really surprised this was what he was
playing cause I thought he was strictly a Marine Band man. Later in the set
he did pull out what I'm fairly certain were a couple of Marine Bands and
did get a nastier tone when he was blowin' through them. He played an old
Little Walter tune that really had tone to burn, but I can't remember the
name of the tune.

The set was balanced with lots of very good guitar and vocals. It is
definitely not a harp set though harp is well featured throughout. Kim does
have good vocals to go with the excellent harp playing of course.

The bass player chews gum at the same speed he plays bass and neither are
slow by any means. A fan (and you gotta be a fanatic) asked for and got his
gum at the end of the set. Whew!?, I've seen some people ask for some weird
things but gum!!!??? Chewed gum!!!???

Anyway, highly recommend that you see them when their tour bus hits your
city. It's well worth seeing this band. I was really surprised to see them
playing in this very small venue, but it was quite worthwhile.

I began collecting data about the microphones used by blue harp players before there was an internet. I began organizing it into in the late 1990s. I accumulated more stuff than I remember. This is some of it.
