Subject: Re:Marsalis' 12 tips

Mike's comments on the value of a positive attitude reminded me of
something on saw recently on TV. Did anyone catch the TV series on music
put out by Winton Marsalis awhile back? I caught one episode on
Practicing. Mike's words remind me of #11 of Winton's 12 Tips on
Practicing.

11) BE OPTIMISTIC. He suggested "Nobody wants to listen to a pessimistic
horn player", and he shared a quote from somebody, "Music washes away the
dust of everyday life from your feet". I like that.

His 12 Tips for Practicing were pretty solid IMHO. Here are the other 11.

1) Seek out private instruction.
2) Write out a schedual to practice the fundamentals of your instrument.
3) Set goals to chart your development (Where do you want to be in a
month, a year, etc).
4) Concentrate (Eliminate distractions if possible)
5) Relax and practice slowly
6) Practice longer on stuff you can't play
7) Play everything as if you were singing ie: with feeling
8) Don't be too hard on yourself, learn from your mistakes
9) Don't show off ("If you play for the applause, that's all you're
gonna get.")
10) Think for yourself

12) Look for the musical connections

Later harpers,

Buy the Book!

I cleaned up my tab for Sonny Boy's Help Me and made it into a short book. There's a Kindle version for 99 cents, and if you buy the paperback you get the Kindle free.

Playing "Help-Me" In the Style of Sonny Boy Williamson II: A step by step, note for note analysis of some of Sonny Boy's Signature Riffs

I also write Science Fiction, so you can sample some of my best stories. Also available in Kindle format.

I began collecting data about the microphones used by blue harp players before there was an internet. I began organizing it into JT30.com in the late 1990s. I accumulated more stuff than I remember. This is some of it.
