Subject: Starting Out

Hello Harp-Lers-

My name is Keith Carl and I am a new addition to the Harp-L list! I
am currently attending the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire; I am studing
towards a major in Music Education. My priciple instrument is trombone, but
I played other instruments before, including harmonica. I have been tooting
an the harp since I was a kid and have never gotten serious until now. I
have an extreme desire to improve my playing and part of the start of this
wa subscribing to this list. I am a member of other lists and have learned
much from them and I am sure the same will apply here. As far as my style
interests go, I am most interested in playing jazz and classical on the
harmonica.

I have been in hiding for a few days now and enjoying the
discussions so far! I would like to comment on the John Popper string.
Personally, I think his playing is rather unnerving. I don't own any of
the CD's, but I hear enough of them on radio. Does he actually know what
he's playing? Either he has an extreme leval of proficiency or he's just
screwing around.

I own a Hohner "Chromonica" and have bought an instructional manual
(the title escapes my mind) and have been frustrated and need some
guideance. Can someone please:

-describe the correct embouchure (teeth, seperation; tounge; lips,
where on the mouthpiece)
-how do I go about learning (through scales or transposing of
recordings)
-is there a good player or instructor around the Eau Claire area
(Mid-west Wisconsin)(2 hours away from Minneapolis/St. Paul)

I look forward to hearing from you and I like to thank you in advance!

Musically,
Keith

Buy the Book!

I cleaned up my tab for Sonny Boy's Help Me and made it into a short book. There's a Kindle version for 99 cents, and if you buy the paperback you get the Kindle free.

Playing "Help-Me" In the Style of Sonny Boy Williamson II: A step by step, note for note analysis of some of Sonny Boy's Signature Riffs

I also write Science Fiction, so you can sample some of my best stories. Also available in Kindle format.

I began collecting data about the microphones used by blue harp players before there was an internet. I began organizing it into JT30.com in the late 1990s. I accumulated more stuff than I remember. This is some of it.

Harp Tab

A collection of songs and riffs that I’ve worked out over the years, plus some libraries of stuff I’ve converted to tablature. I’ve included most of the notes and instructions that helped me when I was learning to play blues harmonica.
