Here’s something that worked for me: I made a very short extension
cable with a right-angle stereo plug and a mono in-line *jack*.
Shields were connected as usual, while tip and ring on the stereo plug
were connected to tip on the jack to combine the pickups.

That let me use any mono cable I wanted while leaving the guitar
stock. The extension cable was short enough to store in the guitar
case, so I rarely forgot it.
