Mic Kaczmarczik's Speaker Cable Guage Information

Speaker Cable Guage

This directory contains USENET articles Mic has saved about guitars, equipment, pickup, techniques, players, and so on. Mic has graciously granted permission to post the stuff on the JT30 page on the off chance that it might be useful in the context of Blues Harmonica. Mic is not responsible for the content, just the collection.

#18 or #16 will work fine. Here's the rule of thumb I use:

0 to 20 watts 18 gauge.
20 to 40 watts 16 gauge.
40 to 80 watts 14 gauge.
80 to 120 watts 12 gauge.
120 to 200 watts 10 gauge.

That's for (up to) a 6 foot cable.

move down two gauges for each doubling of cable length
For instance, on a 12ft cable instead of 6ft, use 16 gauge instead of 18 on the 20 watt cable.
That table covers the worst case (2 ohm load) typically seen in guitar amp enclosures.
